What is P.A.D?

Over 8.5 million people in the U.S. have P.A.D. Many people mistake the signs and symptoms of P.A.D. for arthritis or aging. These symptoms may include leg pain, muscle fatigue, cold feet, and non-healing ulcers. For example, P.A.D. can cause achy, ‘crampy’ feeling or pain in the muscles when the legs are used. This can happen when you walk or climb stairs, however, the discomfort usually goes away when you rest.

Peripheral Artery Disease (P.A.D.) commonly refers to blockages in the blood vessels of legs and feet. P.A.D. is sometimes referred to as “poor circulation” in the legs. While most people have never heard of P.A.D., it is a common cause of disability, pain, restricted lifestyle, and even amputation. P.A.D. makes it hard or impossible to walk and climb stairs. Importantly, P.A.D. is a serious blood vessel disease, putting people at more than double the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Risk Factors &
Symptoms of P.A.D.

Many people with P.A.D. do not have obvious symptoms, though others may experience one or more of the following:
  • Leg muscle discomfort or pain that is consistently caused by walking, that disappears with rest
  • Foot or toe pain at rest that often disturbs sleep
  • Skin wounds or ulcers on the feet or toes that heal slowly (6-8 weeks)
  • Leg muscle fatigue, heaviness, or cramping
  • Toes or feet that look discolored, pale, or blue
  • One leg or foot that feels colder than the other
  • Thick or yellow toe nails that aren’t growing

You are at higher risk for P.A.D. if you are over the age of 50 and have one or more of the following:
  • Diabetes
  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • A family history of Heart Attack or Stroke
  • History of smoking

Each person we have interacted with at Advanced Vein and Vascular has been very professional. Dr. Kim takes the time to explain and ensure the patient and family understand the procedure, the findings, and the aftercare, and answer all questions. The nurses are outstanding. They are very knowledgeable and they are very conscientious about keeping the patient as comfortable as possible, and also making the family comfortable. My husband and I both would highly recommend Dr. Kim and Advanced Vein and Vascular.Tracy Riley
